How to Share a Livestream and Classroom Recording in Canvas

In this guide for teaching teams, you’ll learn how to share your course’s livestreams and recordings with students, including waitlisted students and students with a 48-Hour Student Pass, using any of the options outlined below. First, review each of the options and decide which one(s) meets your sharing needs. Then, follow the corresponding step-by-step instructions.

Share All Scheduled Livestreams and Class Recordings with All Students in Your Course

If you want to share all scheduled livestreams and recordings with your entire class for the semester, do the following:

1. In your Canvas course, click Videos in the Course Navigation Menu.
   
2. Each section has its own subfolder. Click on the folder of the section you want to access (e.g., Section B).
   
3. Click the Share icon in the top right corner.
   
   
4. In the People and Groups field, type your course’s number (e.g., 15.934).
   
   
5. Select your course for the current term.
   • IMPORTANT: Be sure to select the option labeled “Viewer” (e.g., Fall Term (AY 2021-2022) – 15.934 B::Viewers) when doing so to prevent students from being able to edit or share your livestreams and recordings.
     
     
6. Click the Send an email to notify people checkbox.
   
   
7. Type a message [1] and click Send [2].
   • Optional: Use the Notification Message Template provided below.
   • The student will receive a copy of this message via email with a link to the scheduled livestream. 
   • The subject line of the email received will be: [Panopto] [YOUR NAME] has shared [VIDEO TITLE] with you.
     
8. If the student asks you to share the link again:
   • Follow Steps 1-3.
   • Click the Copy Link button.
     
     
   • Paste and share the link as desired.

Share a Scheduled Livestream with All Students in Your Course

If you want to share the link to a scheduled livestream with all students in your course, do the following:

1. In your Canvas course, click Videos in the Course Navigation Menu.
   
2. Each section has its own subfolder. Click on the folder of the section you want to access (e.g., Section B).
   
3. Click the Show Scheduled Recordings icon.
   
4. Hover your mouse over the scheduled livestream and click Share.
   
   
5. In the People and Groups field, type your course’s number (e.g., 15.934).
   
   
6. Select your course for the current term.
   • IMPORTANT: Be sure to select the option labeled “Viewer” (e.g., Fall Term (AY 2021-2022) – 15.934 B::Viewers) when doing so to prevent students from being able to edit or share your livestreams.

Share a Scheduled Livestream with a Specific Student in Your Course

If you want to share the link to a scheduled livestream with a specific student in your course, do the following:

1. In your Canvas course, click Videos in the Course Navigation Menu.
   
2. Each section has its own subfolder. Click on the folder of the section you want to access (e.g., Section B).
   
3. Click the Show Scheduled Recordings icon.
   
4. Hover your mouse over the scheduled livestream and click Share.
   
   
5. In the People and Groups field, type the email address of the student you want to share the livestream with.
   
   
6. Select the name of the student from the drop-down list.
   • IMPORTANT: Be sure to select the option that starts with “Canvas\” (e.g., Canvas\danielharris@mit.edu) when doing so.
   • Note: To share the livestream with multiple students, repeat Steps 6 and 7 until you’ve added all the desired students.
     
     
7. Click the Send an email to notify people checkbox.
   
   
8. Type a message [1] and click Send [2].
   • Optional: Use the Notification Message Template provided below.
   • The student will receive a copy of this message via email with a link to the scheduled livestream. 
   • The subject line of the email received will be: [Panopto] [YOUR NAME] has shared [VIDEO TITLE] with you.
     
9. If the student asks you to share the link again:

Share a Classroom Recording with All Students in Your Course

If you want to share the link to a classroom recording with all students in your course, do the following:

3. Hover your mouse over the recording you want to share and click Share.
   
   
4. In the People and Groups field, type your course’s number (e.g., 15.934).

   • IMPORTANT: Be sure to select the option labeled “Viewer” (e.g., Fall Term (AY 2021-2022) – 15.934 B::Viewers) when doing so to prevent students from being able to edit or share your recordings.

   • IMPORTANT: Be sure to select the option that starts with “Canvas\” (e.g., Canvas\danielharris@mit.edu) when doing so.
